Whether you drive an electric vehicle (EV) or are thinking about making the switch, here’s an introductory guide to some of the most useful digital resources. The right tools can make sure you get where you need to go when you need to. Three of the most dependable app categories for EV drivers include:
- Vehicle Manufacturer Apps
- General Station Locators
- Charger Operator Apps
1. Vehicle Manufacturer Apps
The first app every EV driver should install is their vehicle manufacturer’s dedicated EV app. Whether it’s Tesla, Rivian, or Ford, most EV automakers offer their own app to assist with charger discovery and vehicle operation. Manufacturer apps typically include information on nearby stations, as well as important vehicle-specific data and recommendations.
Note: Some manufacturers’ apps strictly display stations within their network, even if the vehicle is compatible with other chargers. This brings us to the second type of app you’ll need to download: a station locator.
2. Station Locators
Station locators show all charging stations in a designated area. These locators can be crucial for drivers looking to charge in new places. Most offer filters to refine your search, including accessibility, charger level, plug type, availability, operator, and manufacturer.
Great options to familiarize yourself with include PlugShare, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and the Alternative Fuels Data Center.
Note: Station locators are often crowdsourced, meaning their data is updated by the community, enabling more accurate and timely information. It’s encouraged to add missing stations, update existing ones, and leave reviews after charging - this helps the entire EV driving community.
3. Charger Operator Apps
Charging network-specific apps are those offered by the station’s operator. For instance, many station operators require their app to begin, end, and pay for a charging session. To avoid having to download a new app each time, installing a few of the operators’ apps you use most can help streamline charging and free up storage. Popular examples of network-specific apps include Chargie, ChargePoint, EVgo, and Electrify America.
Note: These apps may only include network-operated stations, meaning general station locators are a promising solution if one cannot find a station within the app. Additionally, many station operators, like Chargie, allow complete station functionality (start, stop, pay) via web versions with guest checkout, so app installation and account creation aren’t always required.
The Chargie App
Chargie’s Mobile App is built by EV drivers for EV drivers. As EV drivers ourselves, we understand what drivers need and want. Our intuitive app features live charging metrics, a comprehensive station discovery map, and usage history, and supports multiple payment methods, all in one app. Adding the Chargie App to your inventory can help streamline charger discovery and charging at Chargie-networked stations.
