City of Palo Alto EV Charger Rebate for Multifamily Properties: Up to $80,000 Available Per Project

Background on The Program

As electric vehicle (EV) adoption grows in California, property owners are looking for ways to provide charging access for residents. To help meet this growing demand, City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU) is offering thousands in funding for EV charger installations at multifamily properties. Qualifying applicants can receive up to $8,000 per charging port and as much as $80,000 per property for installation. However, rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to funding availability, so start your application as soon as possible for the best chance of receiving funds. What You Need to Know

Deadline:

  • Rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis while funds last

Eligible Property Types:

  • Multifamily building must have a minimum of four units
  • Mixed-use buildings are also eligible if they have at least four residential units and the installed charging stations are designed primarily for resident use
  • The following property types may qualify for funding: Apartment communities, condominium developments, affordable housing properties, multifamily residential buildings, and mixed-use developments with residential units

Requirements:

  • EVSE must be installed in a shared parking location not assigned or dedicated to particular drivers or owners
  • EVSE must be available to all tenants, owners, employees, and guests
  • If a property has multiple buildings with separate parking areas, additional stations may be allowed at CPAU’s discretion  

Total Funding Available per Charging Port:

  • $8,000 per Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) or Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger installed

Max Award Available for Each Applicant:

  • Up to a maximum of ten ports or EVSEs per applicant, totaling $80,000
  • A maximum of 75% of the total EVSE project installation costs for properties not at designated affordable housing sites
  • A maximum of 100% of the total EVSE project installation costs for properties at designated affordable housing sites
