What is World EV Day?

September 9th, 2025, marks the sixth year of World EV Day, a day to celebrate, share, and promote EV positivity, provide education, and drive policy change. In 2024, there were 58 million electric vehicles on the road globally, 6.3 million of those being within the United States (Our World in Data). There is no question that electric vehicles are here to stay, and with access to charging infrastructure growing and affordable electric models increasing in availability, EV ownership is only expected to rise.

Background From the Organization Directly

“World EV Day was founded by Ade Thomas and his sustainability media company, Green.TV, in partnership with ABB, a global technology company. The first World EV Day was celebrated on September 9th, 2020, and it was created to raise awareness and promote the shift to electric vehicles worldwide.

Uniting companies and individuals, policy makers and thought leaders, World EV Day is a day of activations and announcements that continue to propel the emobility movement across the globe.”

How to Get Involved

Whether you’re currently an EV driver or are looking to make the switch, there are several ways to participate. Current EV drivers are encouraged on World EV Day to inform non-EV drivers about the many benefits of driving electric. For many drivers, making the switch to electric can be daunting and uncertain. Advice and guidance from friends, family, and community members who have made the switch and are happy with their choice can greatly influence others’ transitions. On World EV Day, drivers are also encouraged to organize an EV Meetup, creating a space for EV drivers and non-EV drivers alike to share and learn from each other’s experiences. Meetups can take various forms. Some are private, in-person events, while others can be virtual and open to the public. Regardless of the logistics, the mission of each meetup remains the same. Meetups help increase education around driving electric and assist those hoping to make the switch in feeling more confident in their decision.

Chargie’s Mission

At Chargie, we know every action can make a difference. We all share a collective responsibility in preserving our planet. Chargie is dedicated to increasing EV charger accessibility, so charging is no longer a privilege for a select few, but rather a universal right for anyone who wants to drive electric. As EV drivers ourselves, we will participate in World EV Day by continuing to educate drivers on the benefits of driving electric and increasing charger access so that more people can make the switch.
